April Showers Brings May Powers

Chrystal Mincey

As April's rain and wind give way to May's bloom, we must gear up and unleash our cycling powers! Do not let the showers dampen your spirits, nor let the wind blow you away, because behind every raindrop and every blow of the wind lies the promise of newfound strength and resilience. We do not just literally mean April's elements. We are also talking to cyclists who do not ride year-round but stay in cycling shape by doing daily stretching, riding on their training bikes, doing Zwift rides, Peloton rides, and whatever else you do to keep in your riding season shape.

Let us embrace the changing seasons and embark on exhilarating rides that will leave you feeling empowered and invigorated. Let us turn those rainy days into opportunities to push our limits, conquer new challenges, and emerge more vital than ever!

Rain, wind, or shine, we will be pedaling through the elements (well, to the sound of it inside, for some), fueled by our passion for cycling and the camaraderie of our fellow riders. So, saddle up, and let us show the cycling world what we are made of!

Remember, it is about learning to ride through the storm and emerge victorious on the other side. Together, we will prove that there is no limit to what we can achieve with dedication, determination, and a love for the open road.

If you must ride in the rain, here are a few tips for riding in wet weather:

  • Dress for the weather
  • Optimize your vision
    • Invest in water-resistant cycling glasses for clear sight
    • Wear a cap or visor for additional protection from the rain
  • Adjust how you control your bike:
    • Gentle braking is best to prevent skidding and maintain traction on slippery surfaces
    • Increase following distance to give ample reaction time
    • Maintaining control is vital when adjusting your riding technique for wet conditions - opt for gentle

  • Make sure your bike is rain-ready
    • Regularly check and lubricate the chain
    • Inspect the brakes and make necessary adjustments for reliable stopping power
    • Ensure your tire pressure is suitable for wet conditions, providing better traction

  • Light Up
    • Wear bright and reflective clothing
    • Use bike lights, front and rear
Keep pedaling and smiling and make this cycling season one to remember!
