April/May 2024

April Showers Brings May POWERS

Greetings Cycling Family!

As April's rain and wind give way to May's bloom, we must gear up and unleash our cycling powers! Do not let the showers dampen your spirits, nor let the wind blow you away, because behind every raindrop and every blow of the wind lies the promise of newfound strength and resilience. We do not just literally mean April's elements. We are also talking to cyclists who do not ride year-round but stay in cycling shape by doing daily stretching, riding on their training bikes, doing Zwift rides, Peloton rides, and whatever else you do to keep in your riding season shape.

Keep pedaling and smiling and make this cycling season one to remember!

GII GIVES BACK
Thank you for your support, donations, and toiletries for N Street Village. GII Members donated 200-plus toiletries during our recent club meeting as we gave back to the communities in which we cycle. Together we make a difference!

Bike Give-Away

On May 2nd, GII gifted bikes to 5 amazing students at Hollywood Elementary who showed outstanding academic progress. During our visit, we also shared valuable tips on bike maintenance and safety ensuring these young riders are set up for success on the road.

Standing in the Gap

Sunday April 28th, GII along with the local cycling community attended the Cycling Season Blessing at First Baptist Church of Glenarden (FBCG). One hundred fifty cyclists were in attendance from various area clubs. FBCG Pastor John Jenkins, prayed over the cycling clubs for the 2024 season. Cyclists were able to attend the noon service, prepared for the blessing ceremony and joined local clubs in a 7-mile casual community ride. Your fellow members stood in the gap for you as we always do. We make sure you are covered.

YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS MATTER

Welcome to GII’s “Your Contributions Matter.” In this section, we highlight the outstanding efforts and contributions made by a member of our cycling club. From volunteering initiatives, to creative projects, and of course to our rides. We celebrate the positive impacts our members are making. Join us in recognizing their dedication and commitment to making a difference.

Jeremy (Jerm) Norris, father of two, loves to stay active in just about any sport. He bought his first bike in 2016 but only rode on the Indian Head Trail or Mount Vernon trail. “I was more into running and lifting weights. I was an avid tough Mudder and Spartan race participant. Right before the pandemic, a Facebook friend saw me post about a solo ride I did and invited me out to a GII group ride. I came out and had a ball and I just kept coming back and coming back. The pandemic hit and they closed all the gyms so I had no choice but to ride in order to stay active. Joining GII, I have met some of the best people with whom I ever crossed paths. Being a ride leader, I love trying to keep the ride safe and encouraging newer cyclists to ‘Keep pushing up that hill’ or ‘Keep pushing! We are almost done!”
